The Owl Cafe
Neko Cafes are very popular and known all over the world. There are at least 39 cafes located just in Japan!
But there is one cafe that stands out more than all of the Cat Cafes: The Owl Cafe “Fukuro no Mise”, the world first Owl Cafe.
I recommend to arrive at least one hour before the opening time to make a reservation, since the space fills up very quickly and reservations can only be made for the same day.
For example, I arrived exactly at their opening time but I could only get a reservation for 3 hours later.
The entry goes by a system where the day is devided into several one-hour time slots. Only a limited number of people are allowed to enter at the same time.
After entering the place with several other customers the staff gave a short introduction in Japanese. If you don’t know Japanese, there’s an English speaker every Friday.
The owls are tame and very calm. You are allowed to pet them on their head and hold them on your arm, shoulder or even put them on your head. Some owls are very huge and heavy and some were even smaller than my hands. Their feathers are very soft, especially the baby owls.
Recording videos is not allowed but taking pictures without flash is.
To get to Fukuro no Mise, take the subway to Tsukishima station (it takes about 30 minutes from Ikebukuro). Walk out of Gate 10 and the cafe is just a 3 minutes walk away. Entry is 2000 yen, which includes a drink and a souvenir.
